Join the CBA for a luncheon discussion on, “Bridges of Justice: Ethical, Moral, and Legal Perspectives on Immigration,” with His Eminence Cardinal Blase J. Cupich and John Heiderscheidt at the Union League Club of Chicago, in partnership with the Latino Policy Forum and the Hispanic Federation. (IN PERSON SEMINAR)
This program will be moderated by Robert Kreisman, Chair of the Club’s Public Affairs Committee, and 2nd Vice President of the Union League Club of Chicago.
This panel will examine the intersection of the moral imperatives associated with immigration policy and the legal complexities facing immigrants. These issues are critically significant in our current political landscape. Cardinal Cupich, a dedicated advocate for human dignity and social justice, will discuss the ethical and moral imperatives of immigration policy—issues of compassion, justice, and human rights. He will address the moral obligations we, as a society, owe to immigrants, regardless of their legal status. Mr. Heiderscheidt will discuss how legal frameworks define and limit immigration status.
This panel is designed to be a call for reflection, action, and a more humane approach to immigration policy. Following their initial remarks, the panelists will engage in a moderated discussion, allowing time for audience questions. Join us as we challenge assumptions, examine our shared responsibilities, and thoughtfully explore one of the most pressing issues of our time.
The CBA will administer IL MCLE Credit and the program will be hosted at Union League Club of Chicago, 65 W Jackson Blvd., Chicago IL 60604. Lunch will be provided. This is an in-person program hosted at The Chicago Bar Association building (321 S. Plymouth Court, Chicago, IL 60604). Lunch will be provided.
In an era where families of wealth are not just funding change, but building the systems that make it possible, structure matters more than ever. This program will include a panel discussion and luncheon included with registration.

This session focuses on understanding financial statements, intermediate level financial analysis and essential concepts underlying the presentation of financial information to assess their reliability. At the end of the program, lawyers will be able to ask better questions regarding the financial statements they need to review and analyze and/or to recognize when the level of complexity is such that they need to hire a forensic accountant to assist in that review and analysis.
An entity’s financial statements convey a great deal of significant information regarding its financial position and the results of its operations. The ability to understand financial statements is a critical skill for corporate, family, trial, and other lawyers. It also is essential for lawyers reviewing financial statements to be able to "read between the lines.” This session focuses on understanding financial statements, intermediate level financial analysis and essential concepts underlying the presentation of financial information to assess their reliability. At the end of the program, lawyers will be able to ask better questions regarding the financial statements they need to review and analyze and/or to recognize when the level of complexity is such that they need to hire a forensic accountant to assist in that review and analysis.
The program will be taught by a forensic accountant with more than 45 years of experience who is a Certified Fraud Examiner, Certified Public Accountant, and Certified in Financial Forensics. The program is built around a case study that incorporates the financial shenanigans seen in the investigative projects completed over several years. The case study includes a full set of financial statements, including footnote disclosures. (Participants attending the program will need to have a copy of the case study financial statements at the program to derive the maximum benefit from the program.)
The program provides special emphasis on "financial shenanigans" - ways in which Generally Accepted Accounting Principles ("GAAP") might be manipulated to create misstated financial statements - as well as practical suggestions on how to find misstatements in financial statements of both public companies and medium sized, family owned businesses.
The program is ideal for corporate attorneys, trial lawyers, bankruptcy counsel, family law practitioners and general counsel.
