Topic: One Client, Five Bosses, and the Neighbor Next Door: A Look Behind the Curtain of Community Association Law

This presentation will address various considerations in representing community associations, including ethical implications of representing organizations as clients, the allocation of decision-making authority between a lawyer and a client, and will address examples of conflict-of-interest and recusal.

Speaker: Michael J. Shifrin, Principal Attorney, Shifrin Legal

Michael Shifrin is the founder and principal of Shifrin Legal, Inc., a Chicago-based boutique law firm that exclusively represents community associations. For two decades, Michael has counseled volunteer boards on governance, governing document interpretation, rule enforcement, assessment collections, and litigation. He is known for what he calls “the human side of law”: pairing sound legal advice with a practical understanding of the board members and the communities he serves. Michael is a leader in the Community Association industry, having been recognized by Leading Lawyers, and is a three-time recipient of the Super Lawyers Illinois award.
