The SAFE-T Act: Detention and Bail in Illinois (1/11/24)

The SAFE-T Act made Illinois the first state to abolish cash bail. Sharlyn Grace, Senior Policy Advisor for the Law Office of the Cook County Public Defender, has been at the forefront of the SAFE-T Act, which has brought sweeping reform to Illinois’ justice system, most prominently affecting pretrial detention and bail. Ms. Grace will give a broad overview of the detention and bail provision of the Act, discuss how the law has been implemented in courts throughout Cook County and its collar counties, and examine recent appellate decisions in their interpretation of various provisions of the Act. Join us to learn how to navigate your clients through this new detention and bail system.
