Topic: A Discussion of A People’s History of the United States by Howard Zinn
Speaker: Robert Brunn, Vice Chair, Law and Literature Committee
Zinn’s unflinching and influential summary of the history of the United States sets forth a full and complete history of the formation and development of the United States of America, from the perspective of the people, not the government. Originally published in 1980, the book’s decades-long power comes from its commitment to detailing difficult truths about the way that government and legal systems were used to shape and guide society, using legal structures to create wealth and prosperity for a new and powerful nation while simultaneously legalizing the exploitation of so many classes of people. Zinn’s History includes in depth discussion of the ways in which law and policy-making power were used to further American prosperity and reputation, at home and abroad, at the expense of so many working people across the centuries. This is an American history book written for the people whose rights were stripped, and whose lives were sacrificed, for the building of America.
Areas of law covered include constitutional law, immigration, labor relations, civil rights, voting rights, health care, property law, criminal law and procedure, and access to justice.
