Immigration and Nationality Law Committee (12/18/26)

Includes a Live Web Event on 12-18-2026 at 12:15 PM (CST)

Topic: Immigration at the U.S. Supreme Court: The Year in Review and What is to Come

Speaker: Lisa Koop, Director of Legal Services, National Immigrant Justice Center; Adjunct Professor, Notre Dame Law School

Program Description: In 2026, the U.S. Supreme Court issued decisions that change the complexion of immigration law. Birthright citizenship, access to asylum at the border, and temporary protected status received formal treatment by the Court, while other immigration-related matters were shaped by interim decisions on the emergency – or “shadow” – docket. As we look forward, the U.S. Supreme Court has granted certiorari in other matters including questions around mandatory detention and bond and third country removals. The Court may also take up questions related to the terrorism related inadmissibility grounds.  This session will review the U.S. Supreme Court’s immigration-related decisions of 2026 and discuss the arguments and opinions we expect in 2027. The session will also discuss recent immigration-related decisions of the Seventh Circuit and matters pending before that court.  In particular, the session will review the Seventh Circuit’s law on asylum and how it may be modified and/or clarified by forthcoming decisions.

Speaker Bio: Lisa Koop is the director of legal services at the National Immigrant Justice Center. She directs NIJC's asylum project, handles federal litigation, and provides representation and supervision in deportation defense matters.
