Lawyers and other legal professionals often see people on their worst days, and work with clients through the difficult, disruptive, and chaotic periods of life that often give rise to intense emotions. As a result, it is important to be equipped to talk to clients who may be experiencing big emotions or struggling with other mental health issues. This presentation will cover practical strategies for de-escalating clients experiencing intense emotions. Participants will learn ways to show empathy and understanding while also moving the conversation forward in a way that is sensitive to clients' needs, which strengthens the attorney-client relationship by fostering trust, rapport, and confidence.
Speaker:
Tatiana Duchak is an attorney and Licensed Clinical Professional Counselor (LCPC). Before attending law school, she worked as a therapist for over a decade in the forensic mental health field, treating individuals in jails, prisons, state psychiatric hospitals, and child welfare facilities. She has worked extensively with survivors of profound trauma, the severely mentally ill, and those in crisis. Upon graduating from Loyola University of Chicago School of Law, Tatiana began working as a mitigation specialist, using her clinical expertise to assist on Miller resentencing cases, pretrial sentencing, and clemency petitions. She also maintains her own private therapy practice and is committed to ensuring mental health services are accessible to those reentering the community after incarceration.
