An Examination of the Costs of Mass Deportations (2/20/25)

An Examination of the Economic, Social and Legal Costs of Mass Deportations

The United States has long grappled with immigration policy, but what occurs when enforcement efforts escalate into widespread deportations? Beyond the political headlines, such actions have significant economic, social, and legal repercussions. How would cities, businesses, and court systems manage the aftermath? What burdens are states and taxpayers likely to face? This program, the first in a series exploring the impacts of U.S. immigration policy, investigates the financial and institutional realities of mass deportations. Join us for a substantive, data-driven discussion that goes beyond rhetoric to explore the real-world impact of the mass deportation of immigrants.

Speakers:
Hon. Ruben Castillo (Ret.), Former Federal Chief Judge of the Northern District of Illinois
Elizabeth T. Powers, Associate Professor of Economics, University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign
