  • Intellectual Property Law Committee (1/26/21)

How Patent Infringement Concerns May Shape COVID-19 Vaccine Development and Deployment (Live Webcast Only: IL MCLE Credit)

TOPIC: How Patent Infringement Concerns May Shape COVID-19 Vaccine Development and Deployment

DESCRIPTION: The COVID-19 pandemic has driven pharmaceutical companies around the world to shift their focus to develop a safe and effective vaccine and/or therapeutic treatment as quickly as possible. However, the urgency and speed at which research and trials are being conducted leaves little time for companies to assess legal risks – including potential patent infringement. This program will provide an in-depth discussion of the options available to the Federal Government to shield potential infringers from liability in order to accelerate vaccine delivery and meet public demand. Also discussed will be how patent damages may be assessed in light of this unprecedented situation if companies are not immunized of infringement by the government.

SPEAKER(S)/ORGANIZATION:  David Duski is a Director in BDO’s Forensic Investigation and Litigation Services group and leads its intellectual property consulting practice. Throughout his career, David has provided dispute resolution services for cases involving patent infringement, trademark infringement, trade secret misappropriation, false advertising, breach of contract, business interruption, legal malpractice, and product liability, among others. He has also provided financial and economic consulting for attorneys and corporate clients.

How Chicago's ticket debt sent tens of thousands into bankruptcy – and whether the city’s “reforms” are actually working for indebted motorists. (Live Webcast Only: IL MCLE Credit)

TOPIC: How Chicago's ticket debt sent tens of thousands into bankruptcy – and whether the city’s “reforms” are actually working for indebted motorists.

Melissa Sanchez, of ProPublica, will examine how Chicago’s aggressive ticketing and debt collection policies prompted thousands of mostly black motorists to file for Chapter 13 bankruptcy, and whether a series of reforms enacted over the past year have actually helped indebted Chicagoans. The presentation will also look at the city’s controversial practice of refusing to return impounded vehicles to motorists in bankruptcy, a policy that was intended to reduce bankruptcy filings but is now being examined by the U.S. Supreme Court.
