The Undocumented J.D.: Admissibility to the Bar (7/29/20)

The Undocumented J.D.: The Changing Landscape of Admissibility to the Bar for Undocumented Immigrants

The vast majority of undocumented law students and law graduates are a diverse group, mostly originating from Mexico, South and Central America, Asia and the Caribbean.  The admittance of these individuals to the legal profession would significantly increase diversity within the profession. However, the intersection of immigration regulations, employment restrictions and each state’s bar admission requirements creates a legal quandary not only for newly minted law school graduates, but also for each state’s legislature, judiciary and bar admission committee.

Our speaker will provide an overview of the recent decisions addressing whether undocumented immigrants may practice law in the U.S. as well as the impact of the Supreme Court’s decision regarding the Trump administration’s attempt to rescind a program that grants deportation referral to certain undocumented individuals.
