Deepfakes are defined as synthetic media in which a person in an existing image, video, or audio recording is replaced with someone else’s likeness. The quality of deepfakes is on the rise, making it increasingly difficult to tell the difference between what’s real and what has been doctored. In a landscape where notions of truth and reality have become increasingly politically polarized and weaponized, deepfakes have urgent implications both culturally and legally. After all, if you can’t trust what you see or hear, what can you trust?
In this seminar, we’ll breakdown the technology behind creating and detecting deepfakes so that even technologically disinclined lawyers will be armed with the basic knowledge they need to keep abreast of these developments. We’ll explore how this technology is already impacting legal proceedings and how it might impact society at large. We’ll also take a look at how states, countries, and social media companies are attempting to regulate deepfakes within their borders and platforms.
