Nuanced Injustice: Collateral Immigration Consequences from Convictions (5/12/2021)
This panel will examine how criminal convictions affect removal proceedings, often unexpectedly and counterintuitively. Specifically, our panel will examine commonly problematic nuances of criminal dispositions that can derail an immigration proceeding from reaching a successful outcome. The panelists will explore the difficulty of articulating these seemingly illogical rules and scenarios to clients, i.e., lay people, so they can make an overall informed decision about both the criminal and immigration aspects of their predicament. The panelists will lend their unique perspectives in litigating immigration and criminal cases to provide tips to practitioners to avoid some of these common pitfalls.
