New Developments in Non-Lawyer Ownership of Law Firms (02/09/22)

Several states have amended or are considering amending their version of ABA Model Rule 5.4, which prohibits lawyers from (i) sharing legal fees with nonlawyers, except under limited exceptions, or (ii) practicing law through a law firm (or similar entity) that has nonlawyer owners or officers. This seminar will provide an overview of the traditional rules barring non-lawyer ownership and the more permissive rules that have been adopted or considered by several states. We’ll discuss the ethical implications attorneys should be aware of, including issues relating to the unauthorized practice of law, conflicts of interest, client solicitation and advertising, bundled legal services, and limited scope representations.
