Gender Equity in Litigation (04/06/22)

A robust body of research has established that, despite nearly equal graduation rates from law school and entry into the legal profession for over thirty years, a substantial and enduring gender gap in the legal profession remains.  When compared to their male counterparts, women lawyers experience disparities in numerous areas including: earnings; receipt of necessary mentorship and sponsorship; promotion to partner and leadership positions within their firms; serving as “first chair” or lead counsel in litigation; and appearances in appellate courts.  Gender equity progress in the legal profession has been notably slow, with women’s advancement in litigation particularly so. This CLE will begin with a presentation by Dr. Dana Alvaré, Reed Smith’s Global Gender Equity Advisor, reviewing the current research about gender equity in the legal profession, with a specific focus on women in litigation. The session will continue to include a panel discussion with practicing women litigators who will share their personal experiences in this field as well as provide practical advice for overcoming potential hurdles.

The CLE portion of this program will be followed by an orientation session from 6:30-7:00pm for those who will volunteer for the Girl Scouts Project Law Track. The orientation will not be CLE accredited.
