Chief Justice Anne M. Burke discussing Judicial Redistricting and Statewide Pretrial Services (11/30/2021)

Chief Justice Anne M. Burke will speak on the historic new legislation – the Judicial Districts Act of 2021 – which Governor Pritzker signed into law on June 4, 2021, as well as the significant logistical challenges resulting from this legislation, which necessitated the pause order entered by the Supreme Court on June 7, 2021. She will also discuss the steps that are being taken to address these challenges and to bring about an orderly transition to the new judicial districts created by the legislation while ensuring that our courts maintain access to justice pursuant to the powers and duties entrusted to the Court by the Illinois Constitution.

In addition, Chief Justice Burke will provide an update on the new operational structure for statewide pretrial services that is being developed to implement the Pretrial Fairness Act component of the SAFE-T Act. She will speak about the Supreme Court’s creation a new Office of Statewide Pretrial Services and the efforts being made to have the new statewide, legal- and evidence-based pretrial system in place when the Act goes into effect on January 1, 2023.
